About the Choir

Alex Graham from Dalmuir School Former Pupils' Choir founded the choir as the Clydebank Lyric Choir in 1959. At that time, the choir sang from a repertoire of part songs many of which had become well known to audiences through the concerts and recordings of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir, of which Alex Graham had himself been a member.

His sudden death in 1976 left the choir shocked and bereft.  It was fortunate that one of its members, James Hay, was able to assume the conductorship of the choir and thus continue in similar tradition. In January 1983 the choir appointed Nairn Maxwell Young as its conductor. Under Nairn's direction the choir moved to the west end of Glasgow and became the "Glasgow Lyric Choir". The repertoire gradually moved away from part songs to that of the Choral works of the baroque, classical, romantic and modern masters.

After 17 years Nairn retired and the choir appointed Steve Birch as its Musical Director/conductor in 2000 carrying on the choral tradition. The Glasgow Lyric Choir has become an established part of the Glasgow music scene, rehearsing in the West End of the City..
